Home charcuterie

Those who have followed this blog for a while (or have met me in person) already know that I’m a fan of home-made charcuterie: bacon, sausage, ham, pastrami, etc. Over the last few months, the quality and consistency of said DIY projects has gone up considerably from our initial wonderful-but-inconsistent results.

While I didn’t actually prepare the cure for either of these batches, I did take at least my share of time at the smoker to insure their juicy-salty-goodness.

We smoked two small heritage birds, and roasted another free-range one with our “traditional” Guinness-and-butter basting method. (The hams in question are Isaac and myself, of course.)

It wasn’t a sweep, but we won on the issue that really, really mattered. Measure 49 passed, and 50 was close enough to give me hope that a better-structured alternative will have a lot of popular support.

Derby

Shooting roller derby was fun, but I think being a spectator is actually more enjoyable. (Plus, I don’t really have the right lenses for sports shooting.)

It’s a funny thing: that’s the same way I felt about the last concert I went to. Maybe there’s something to be said about just being a civilian at all these events…
